Get to know more about the Famicom
Upon its release in Japan, the Family Computer sold 500,000 copies in two months. Its success comes from its technical superiority compared to the competition and its price of 14,800 yen, half the price of the average of the other consoles present on the Japanese market in 1983.
Nintendo expanded its customer base by exporting the console to the United States in 1985, renamed Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo, and its boss Hiroshi Yamauchi, are convinced that a good catalog of games is the main selling point.
This console is a commercial success, Nintendo estimating having sold 62 million. At the end of the 1980s, in Japan and the United States, one in three households was equipped with a Famicom. At the time, Nintendo was the most profitable Japanese company, ahead of Toyota. More than 1,200 games were developed for this console.
